Shell Oil is testing its patented in situ Conversion Process in the 30x40 foot area on the left. Freeze wells are drilled around the perimeter, creating an ice wall to keep water out. Up to 2,000 feet below the surface, the rock layer is then heated to 650°F, converting organic matter to oil and gas.
