The Thompson Creek Mine created a 600' high sand dam to store the tailings left over from the milling process. This dam contains materials that can generate acid-mine drainage. Pollution from the tailings impoundment is currently being captured and treated by the mining company but this pollution will continue in perpetuity. So far, no money has been set aside for water treatment operations after the mine closes.
