Maroon Bells in June, 2013
This wilderness area has six fourteeners and 100 miles of trail. It was first protected under the Wilderness Act of 1964 at 66,100 acres. In 1980, a citizen effort lead by Aspen Wilderness Workshop co-founders Connie Harvey, Joy Caudill and Dottie Fox, got legislation passed to expand wilderness protections for the area. Today the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area is 181,602 acres.
