Proposed Cumo Mine
The mound-shaped landform in the center of the photo is the site of the CuMo Project. A Canadian mining company hopes to create one of the world's largest open pits, one square mile in size, where this mountain currently stands. Massive waste rock piles and tailings dams would be situated nearby. The mine would sit at the headwaters of the Boise River which provides more than 20% of the City of Boise's drinking water supply. Mining is the number one toxic polluter in the US. The Idaho Conservation League and others are working to protect the Boise River from this mine.
